The Business of Rugby

18 September 2012

18:30

BGL BNP Paribas (Agence Monterey)

The Ireland Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce (ILCC) is delighted to announce that their next event will be held on Tuesday 18 September 2012 at the BGL BNP Paribas (Agence Monterey, entrance on Rue Notre Dame) with Donal Lenihan as Guest Speaker.

Donal Lenihan is well known and respected in rugby circles in Ireland and internationally. He played rugby for UCC while studying there and garnered a reputation on the field as a tough second row forward. He gained his first cap for Ireland in 1981 when just 22 years old and played continuously in the national team until 1992 during which time the team won two Triple Crowns and three 5 Nations Championships. He captained Ireland on 17 occasions, including leading them at the inaugural Rugby World Cup in New Zealand and Australia in 1987; he also played in the 1991 World Cup in Europe. He played on two Lions Tours (1983 & 89). After his playing career he managed the Irish team from 1998-2000 and then the Lions tour in 2001. He has retained his links with the sport and is renowned as a rugby commentator on radio and television and as a newspaper columnist.

He will be speaking on the topic “The Business of Rugby”. He will be looking at the transition from the amateur to the professional era, in particular off the field, and how strategy and decisions have impacted on the sport in Ireland and made it into a business. The presentation will look at the different approaches to professionalism adopted by other national unions, as well as other professional sports, and how other business sectors can learn from “the business of rugby”. He will also touch on the business of a Lions tour given the forthcoming tour to Australia.

He will recount anecdotes from his days as a player and a manager, as well as subsequently in the media, and will share his views of how the advent of professionalism changed the sport, how rugby learned from other sports, and how other industries can learn from rugby.
